Have you ever had that stuck feeling? Not because you’re failing—but because nothing’s evolving. The role isn’t bad. You’re not burned out. But there’s a low-level frustration, like your growth has… paused.

That’s not a motivation problem. It’s a wave problem.

I’ve seen this pattern in many professionals—ambitious, driven, and talented—but feeling flat. Not because they lost their edge, but because they outgrew their current wave without realizing it.

Career growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. It happens in waves.

You move through four key waves again and again:

  1. Learning – Building skills, absorbing knowledge

  2. Creating – Producing, innovating, contributing

  3. Connecting – Building your brand, networking, sharing your work

  4. Reaping – Capitalising on your growth—positioning for the next move

If you stay too long in any one wave—especially learning or reaping—you stagnate.

The key is to intentionally shift when the time comes.

Ready to ride the right wave? Here’s how:

Identify your current wave
Ask: Am I spending most of my time learning, creating, connecting, or reaping? And how long have I been here?

Know when it’s time to move on
• Still taking courses but not applying? Time to create.
• Building content but no one sees it? Time to connect.
• Reaping rewards but feeling bored? Time to learn again.

Design your next wave
Be proactive. What would riding a new wave look like?

  • Learning a new tech skill

  • Launching a passion project

  • Reaching out to thought leaders

  • Positioning for a new role

Don’t fear repetition
This is a cycle. You’re meant to come back around—just at a higher level.

Growth isn’t just about climbing—it’s about cycling with intention.

So let me ask you:

What wave are you in right now? And is it time to shift?
