I’ve had seasons in my career where I was laser-focused—hitting deadlines, delivering results, staying “heads down.” It felt productive. Year later, I look back and ask myself,, “What was I actually going?”. And other times, I’d get stuck in “heads up” mode—so many ideas and strategies, but nothing was moving. The magic happens when you learn to balance both getting stuff done with looking out into the future of your career.

Career resilience isn’t just about speed—it’s about direction. If you’re always heads down, you might be climbing the wrong ladder. If you’re only heads up, you might not get anything done. Success requires just between big-picture vision and practical execution.

Here’s some suggestions on  how to balance heads-up and heads-down thinking:

Schedule Your Thinking Time – Carve out space each week (even 30 minutes) to reflect on big-picture goals. Journal, brainstorm, or just unplug and walk.

Batch Your Deep Work – When you’re in execution mode, protect your focus. Use tools like the Pomodoro technique or “Do Not Disturb” hours to get things done.

Align Daily Tasks with Strategy – Start each week by asking: “Is this task moving me toward my long-term goals?” If not, consider delegating or deprioritising.

Surround Yourself with Both Thinkers and Doers – Some people help you zoom out on the big picture while others help you get stuff done. You need both in your corner.

You don’t need to choose between dreaming and doing. The most impactful leaders don’t just have big ideas—they know how to make them happen. Balance the vision. Execute the strategy. That’s how you grow.
