I used to believe that being tough on myself was the key to success. “Push harder. Be better.Keep Going” But all it did was drain my energy and dim my confidence. Sound familiar?

Here’s the truth: self-criticism doesn’t make you stronger—it chips away at your focus, mood, and productivity. And it’s a cycle many of us unknowingly repeat.

Here’s how to break free from it:

Avoid generalisation.

A bad meeting, a missed deadline, or a slow week doesn’t define you. Your performance is a curve, not a snapshot. Allow for fluctuations—some days will be below average, and that’s OK.

Think about what could go right.

Instead of spiraling into “what if this fails,” flip the script.

  • What if your idea is the breakthrough?
  • What if your presentation inspires action?
  • What if your solution transforms your team’s workflow?

Timebox your emotions.

Feeling stuck in a spiral of doubt? Set a timer for 30–50 minutes and allow yourself to feel fully. Then, decide to move forward with purpose. Emotions don’t need to run your day.

You deserve to give yourself the same compassion you offer others.
Your inner critic might be loud—but your potential is louder.
